In June 2021, HHS sponsored the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine (NASEM), to host a one-day workshop to explore the ability of primary care clinicians to implement palliative care in patients with advanced chronic conditions.

In January 2022 NASEM released: Integrating serious illness into primary care delivery: Proceeding of a workshop. This report suggests palliative care be implemented at the time of a chronic condition diagnosis and clinically managed in the primary care setting.
